More Capacity and Service, but Sustainable: New Logistics Terminal in the City of Berlin

DHL Freight has opened a new state-of-the-art terminal in Berlin-Marienfelde. The location close to the city center provides excellent logistical connections to the metropolitan region and improves last-mile distribution. In addition, DHL Freight is strengthening its European network and setting benchmarks in modern logistics. The sustainable technology, including a photovoltaic system, e-charging infrastructure, and rainwater harvesting, is sending out a strong signal for environmentally friendly logistics far beyond the capital region.

Better Services and a Stronger European Network

The new terminal in Marienfelde is part of DHL Freight’s long-term growth strategy. 5,200 square meters of operating space and 48 loading gates in the south of Berlin speak for themselves: DHL Freight is not only increasing efficiency and service quality for its customers in the capital region but is also strengthening its entire European network. In addition to handling general cargo and complete loads, the facility will also pilot innovative logistics solutions to better meet future requirements.

Built in just 14 months on a former distillery site covering 20,000 square meters, the innovative freight forwarding facility replaces the existing downtown Berlin terminal, which had reached its capacity limits. The new site complements the DHL freight terminal in Wustermark, west of Berlin. Together, the two locations provide an ideal base for logistics services in the Berlin/Brandenburg metropolitan region.

Lively Opening Ceremony

The strategic importance of the Marienfelde terminal was reflected in the illustrious guests from politics, business, and project partners who attended the opening on January 31, 2025. Among the guests were: Dr. Ann-Kathrin Biewener, Head of Economic Development, District Office of Berlin Tempelhof-Schöneberg; Dr. Thomas Vogel, CEO DHL Freight DACH, UK & IE; Götz Hanningsmann, Area Manager North DHL Freight; real estate developer Marc Urbatsch, Managing Director Operatio GmbH; and Frank Gottschalk, Project Manager of BREMER Berlin-Brandenburg GmbH.

The new terminal in the city of Berlin represents not only an expansion of our capacity, but also our commitment to more sustainable logistics. In addition to various alternative drive systems, including electric trucks, we have invested in measures such as photovoltaics, wind turbines, and modern water management at the site itself. By using modern technologies and optimized processes, we are making the movement of goods and merchandise in the region not only more efficient, but also more sustainable. This is how we create double value for our customers and our environment.

Cutting-Edge Technology for Sustainable Operation

DHL Group and DHL Freight understand growth to be sustainable. That’s why the Marienfelde terminal not only matches our growth strategy, but also DHL’s sustainability strategy, which commits the DHL Group to reducing all emissions to the lowest possible level by 2050 based on the latest climate research. In terms of transport, for example, we are focusing on alternative drive solutions such as electric delivery vehicles on the last mile, fully electric trucks for distribution transport, and emissions-reducing LNG, CNG  and HVO fuels for long-haul transport.

Also in terms of building and operating technology, we are realising ecological potential. Thus, the technical infrastructure of the Marienfelde terminal is consistently geared towards energy efficiency:

  • LED lighting system
  • Heat-pump system for optimum temperature control
  • Charging stations with electricity from renewable sources for cars and for trucks in local and long-distance traffic
  • Photovoltaic system and wind turbines for power self-supply
  • Rainwater cistern to reduce water wastage

The new terminal in Berlin not only improves the quality of our products and services, but is another step towards the green logistics of the future.
