Hub Spoke System

What is a Hub Spoke System?

The Hub Spoke System, also known as a star scheme, is a special transport network consisting of a central hub. Within this hub, different routes run to it in a star pattern. At the end point of each route, goods or people are picked up whose destination is either the central hub or another route.

The number of connections in the hub can be greatly reduced by concentrating freight flows and introducing transhipment points. There are many depots, all of which are distributed throughout the country.

The central advantage of a Hub Spoke System is the perfect use of resources, as the number of trips per day is limited to a single trip. There are no empty runs in order to lower the transport costs. The alternative concept to a Hub Spoke System is a grid system.
