Ex Works (EXW)

What does EXW stand for in logistics?

EXW stands for Ex Works. It means that the seller shall deliver goods as soon as they are made available to the buyer at the seller’s premises or other designated premises (eg. factory, plant, warehouse, etc.). Under this rule, the seller is not obligated to load the goods onto a collecting vehicle or to clear the products for export.

Basically, this means the seller makes the product available at the location selected by the buyer. This type of arrangement is in the seller's favour (at the buyer's expense, since he has to incur transport costs). With this rule, the seller's responsibility consists of packaging the goods and making them available at the designated location.

Overall, the buyer is responsible for all the transportation costs and risks related to the delivery of the goods.
