European Train Control System (ETCS)

What is European Train Control System?

European Train Control System is a component of the ERTMS for signalling and controlling the European trains. ETCS is implemented with a tracking and a unified controlling equipment placed on the train cab. The equipment calculates the maximum speed of the train and wirelessly relates the information to the train driver.

ETCS takes control of the train if the permissible speed is exceeded. And as a result, the train is brought to an halt. The primary function of ETCS is to ensure that all trains operate safely at all time in accordance with the specified standards.
