Buffer storage

What is Buffer storage?

A buffer storage facility, also known as a short-term storage facility, is a temporary storage location for warehouse goods. Accordingly, there are no fixed storage locations in a buffer warehouse. Nor is a buffer storage facility intended as a final storage location: rather, the stored goods wait here to move on to the next process stage, such as dispatch, production or order picking. Due to the arrangement of the buffer storage between two successive process stages, it ensures that a smooth process is guaranteed even in the event of disruptions or fluctuations. If, for example, a disruption occurs in the first process step, work can continue in the following process step with goods from the buffer storage. However, buffer storage in intralogistics naturally also generates additional costs. Not only do they require a lot of space, they also generate additional organisational effort. In addition, there is the necessary purchase of shelves and storage technology.
