The future is yellow!

We're back! After taking a break, from June 4–7 at ‘transport logistic’ in Munich, DHL demonstrated why it is the world's leading logistics company.

“As the leading transportation trade fair, ‘transport logistic’ is the perfect place to present our solutions for such challenges as digitalization, green logistics and the future of global trade,” said Tim Scharwath, CEO DHL Global Forwarding, Freight. On a 400 square meter exhibit site in Munich, DHL offered detailed insights into the future of logistics. A special attraction: a walk-in globe, where you could experience services, terminal processes and innovations from a 360° perspective. “In addition to our standard products, we offered multimodal and industry-specific solutions as well as individualized industrial projects at the highest level,” explained Uwe Brinks, CEO of DHL Freight. “Our promise of excellence. Simply delivered is based on more than 200 years of road freight experience – including 50 years under the DHL brand – a strong network with over 200 terminals in more than 40 countries – and ongoing innovation.”

Among other features, DHL presented:

  • its expertise in tailored solutions for the automotive, chemical, consumer goods, energy, manufacturing and engineering, life sciences & healthcare, retail, technology and public sectors.
  • how it is driving digitalization to benefit its customers.
  • the innovations it uses today
  • to simplify administration and loading.
  • how it implements climate protection and e-mobility in the logistics sector.
  • why DHL is a top employer.

Digitalization makes transportation more efficient

The online platform Saloodo! connects shippers and transport companies and helps to make optimum use of truck capacity. Eurapid, DHL Freight's road freight premium service, guarantees that deliveries arrive on the definite delivery date. And with IT support, DHL Freight offers the Fixed Delivery Day option for its standard product DHL Freight EuroConnect. You then determine in advance when your cargo will arrive at its destination. This gives customers the possibility to better plan the delivery of their freight in advance.

In addition, the DHL Freight owned telematics service provider Agheera makes it possible to monitor and track containers in real time. This is also offered by DHL Global Forwarding with the Ocean View function on sea. An additional feature to find at the DHL booth was the EffiBOT. The robot picking trolley follows warehouse workers as they move through the racks. When the trolley is full, it returns autonomously to an automatic unloading station before returning to the human order picker. This saves the warehouse employee both time and effort spent walking back and forth.

An expanding network

Besides the terminal opening in Vienna another milestone for DHL Freight in 2019 is being built on a 63,000 square meter site near Hanover. The interactive “Terminal for the Future” model at the DHL booth allowed visitors to experience its processes via virtual reality.

Specialists need specialists

In addition to delivering top quality in logistics, you can also rely on top quality in processing customs. Gerlach – Europeans leading customs service provider – is a wholly-owned subsidiary of DHL Freight and received many visitors in Munich. DHL Freight Customs Services and Gerlach are greatly expanding their presence in Spain, Poland and Italy, for example – but equally so in Great Britain, to deal with the unpredictable developments that Brexit will bring. Customers of DHL Freight Customs Services benefit from noticeably less stress, smoother processing, and the avoidance of penalties and delays. Stringent digitalization and a single point-of-contact help to ensure convenient customs processing.

Bringing climate protection to life

The Deutsche Post DHL Group is striving to improve their CO2 efficiency by 50 percent by 2025. What's more, they aim to reduce their logistics-related emissions to zero by 2050. One way the Group is achieving this goal is by designing, building and implementing the use of all-electric StreetScooter delivery vans, which are already established as Europe’s market leader for 100% electric-powered light commercial vehicles. Yamato Transport, Japan's leading logistics service provider, also recently ordered 500 such vehicles to make its last mile service environmentally responsible and employee-friendly. StreetScooters are emission-free, tailored to the customers individual needs and feature extremely low operating and maintenance costs. Around 8,000 StreetScooters and 3,200 StreetScooter e-bikes and e-trikes are currently in operation at Deutsche Post, together saving 23,000 tons of CO2 annually.

DHL Freight has also recently started testing electric trucks in and around Berlin. The FUSO eCanter, Daimler's 7.5 ton truck, is used to deliver to both business customers and private consumers. DHL has also developed TRAILAR for external fleet operators: Lightweight, durable photovoltaic modules on the truck roof can reduce fuel consumption by up to five percent. The TRAILAR exhibit at the ‘transport logistic’ fair demonstrates how.

All these examples prove the responsibility and innovative strength of Deutsche Post DHL Group and the company's motto: “Connecting people. Improving lives!”
