Trucks are primarily used for the commercial transport of goods and materials. In order to meet the diverse logistical requirements in this area, there are different types of trucks with a wide variety of superstructures and designs, such as articulated or semi-articulated trucks. Typical types of trucks used for goods transport are vans, truck-trailer combinations and box wagons. In order to enable uniform classifications, there is the EU Directive 96/53/EC. It divides trucks into vehicle class N. In addition, it differentiates the types of trucks into different subclasses depending on their permissible gross weight: N1 for trucks up to 3.49 tonnes; N2 for trucks between 3.5 and 11.49 tonnes; and N3 for trucks over twelve tonnes.
