A new partner for general cargo in Europe: why Wurm and VONEXIO choose DHL Freight

DHL truck on the road

G. Wurm GmbH + Co. KG and VONEXIO, the fulfillment company within the Wurm group, have entrusted DHL Freight with their outbound freight for pallet shipments in Europe. The first real challenge came immediately: an unplanned large order involving more than 200 pallets. How did this partnership come about, and what has the first few weeks been like?

Who are G. Wurm and VONEXIO?

G. Wurm GmbH + Co. KG is a wholesaler of home decor and interior design products. The group includes VONEXIO, a fulfillment and contract logistics service provider based in Cologne. VONEXIO handles warehousing, order fulfillment, and shipping for online retailers, brick-and-mortar stores, and brands.

A reliable outbound shipping process is essential for both companies. Items picked up in the warehouse must arrive on time to stores, retail partners, and end customers – throughout Europe, not just in Germany.

Why was a change of carrier considered?

Wurm and VONEXIO wanted to restructure their European pallet shipments with a logistics partner that could reliably support their needs and future growth. Benedikt Bitter from DHL Freight’s Field Sales team established contact with DHL Freight. During subsequent consultations, it quickly became apparent that DHL Freight’s network, services, and technical integration were well-suited to the customer’s requirements.

Three requirements of G. Wurm and how DHL Freight answers them

Managing Director Philip Wurm publicly announced the switch on LinkedIn himself. In the post, he describes what was important to the company when selecting its new partner:

  • Reliable systems
  • Clean interfaces
  • On-time delivery

What was the deciding factor in choosing DHL Freight?

Wurm and VONEXIO highlight one advantage in particular: DHL Freight’s Europe-wide network of company-owned locations. This enables seamless and transparent tracking of shipments even across national borders. For customers, this provides a solid foundation for reliable, coordinated transportation processes across Europe.

It took more than just the price to win over the customer. Dalibor Kovac, Field Sales Executive at DHL Freight, acquired the customer and has been their point of contact ever since. He explains what made the difference:

The biggest challenge was not only convincing the customer of the economic appeal of our offer but also building trust in DHL Freight as a long-term logistics partner. It was crucial to show that, beyond price, we provide tangible added value in terms of service, transit time, and order fulfillment.

Philip Wurm also views the decision as a strategic move: “With DHL Freight, we are deliberately choosing an international partner that can support us throughout our continued growth in Europe.”

How did things go from initial contact to getting started?

During a series of meetings, DHL Freight collaborated with the customer to develop the pricing structure, transportation logistics, and IT integration. The interfaces were particularly important to Wurm and VONEXIO because fulfillment operations require seamless data flow between the warehouse and transportation.

The well-prepared transition is the result of close teamwork across various departments. We would like to thank the following colleagues who made this transition possible: Benedikt Bitter, Dalibor Kovac, David Kunz, Christoph Bücker, Andreas Ostermann, and David Daniels. Together, they closely integrated sales, the network, and operations from the very beginning.

How has the partnership fared in the first few weeks?

Philip Wurm openly acknowledges that such a transition takes time. “Of course, a transition like this doesn’t go perfectly from day one.” During the first few weeks, both sides worked together to analyze and resolve initial problems. This close coordination is precisely what won over the client during the proposal phase.

How was the large order of over 200 pallets handled?

Shortly after getting started, Wurm unexpectedly assigned a major order to DHL Freight: more than 200 pallets to be delivered to home decor stores in various locations. In the LinkedIn community, people asked whether such a large volume might be too risky as a first test. Philip Wurm replied confidently: “Sometimes you just have to take the plunge.”

Thanks to careful planning and coordination in advance, everything went according to plan. The entire shipment was picked up by DHL Freight, and shortly thereafter, the first stores reported receiving the goods. Wurm’s conclusion in the comments is brief:

That’s how efficient logistics work!

How is the customer’s feedback?

As early as the first month, the customer reported a noticeable improvement in quality across the board. VONEXIO’s fulfillment customers also gave positive feedback. This confirmed early on what DHL Freight had promised during the sales pitch.

It is most gratifying that these expectations were confirmed shortly after the partnership began and that DHL Freight is now considered a reliable partner.

A partnership aimed at further growth

For Wurm and VONEXIO, switching to DHL Freight is just the first step. The company plans to continue growing and build a new facility in the coming years. Dalibor Kovac is confident: “With these additional projects and our client’s planned growth, DHL Freight has many exciting challenges ahead.”

Philip Wurm outlines the standard for collaboration: “In the end, one thing matters most to our customers: The goods must arrive reliably and on time – throughout all of Europe!”
