Customer event staged by DHL at transport logistic in Munich shows the potential of digitalisation in the transport sector The world’s leading trade fair for the transport sector reported record numbers: 2,162 exhibitors from 62 countries and 60,723 visitors from 123 nations signified respective year-on-year increases of 5.4 and 9.5 percent for the transport logistic in Munich in early May. DHL Freight was there with a large stand along with aseparate presenceby DHL Aviation and the new digital start-up Saloodo!. As the digital revolution was hot topic no. 1 at the industry event, all this made DHL very popular. And, as a digital freight platform, Saloodo! embodies one of the future models of logistics. Consignors and transport companies connect here allowing them to find each other simply and quickly. This shortens delivery times, saves on freight costs and helps to make the best use of vehicle capacities. The major customer event staged by DHL on May 9 was all about Saloodo! and the future of logistics as well. On the topic of “Ready for the future”, true to the focus of the trade fair, everything revolved around the consequences and opportunities brought about by digitalisation in the transport sector.
The series of talks held by 45 DHL Freight customers was kicked off Prof. Dr. Michael ten Hompel from the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (IML). His presentation on the “Transformation to a Social Networked Industry” mainly described the opportunities available to the logistics sector with the transfer of Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things. Logistical operations can be designed much more efficiently with intelligent (autonomous) systems, and the degree of self-organization grows. The real-time analyses of processes slim them down considerably.
The second talk of the evening, which was held by Prof. Dr. Horst WiIdemann, addressed the topic of “Success models for networked added value”. New international cooperations are need for this purpose, which is based less on market mechanisms, and more on the control of the division of labour. Industry 4.0 could deliver the necessary accuracy and flexibility for this, and in real-time. According to Wildemann, the bundling of all these factors helps to avoid wastage and build value added chains.
The rearguard was formed by Amadou Diallo, CEO of Saloodo! GmbH, with his comments on the advantages of the platform and new features such as an algorithm for predicting market prices or a module that helps with complexities of pallet exchange.
Visitors were able experience the features live on the fair stand along with all the other lines from DHL Freight. The Bonn-based company showed itself to be well-prepared for the digital future in the transport sector.
